heritage certificates

frequently asked questions

Before contacting the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Archive, please see if your question has already been answered in our Frequently Asked Questions section.

Q. Is my car tax exempt?
A. Please refer to our tax exempt guide to see if your car falls into the exempt category.

Q. Can you produce a Heritage Certificate for my car?
A. We are able to produce certificates for vehicles listed on our heritage certificates page.  Unfortunately if your car isn't included it means we do not hold the build records for the vehicle and will therefore be unable to assist on this occasion.

Q. Why don't you produce Heritage Certificates for Jaguars?
A. The build records for Jaguars are looked after by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, who will be happy to help you www.jdht.com.

Q. Why can you not produce Heritage Certificates for Minis built after 1969?
A. Unfortunately after 1969 the factory stopped recording the necessary information required for us to compile a certificate. However we would be pleased to produce a ‘Confirmation of Build Date’ letter showing chassis number and a build date, for post 1969 Minis.

Q. I don't want a Heritage Certificate, but can you give me all the details on my car?
A. If you want information informally, please use the Archive Research Service, for a charge of £5 we can provide information taken from a factory record.

Q. I ordered my Heritage Certificate two weeks ago, why haven't I received it yet?
A. We strive to fulfil Heritage Certificate orders as quickly as possible, however due to demand we do have to state a waiting period of 28 days.

Q. What does the engine and body number search mean?
A. This is required when you do not have a chassis number and we have to try and trace the car with either an engine or body number. Only chassis numbers are recorded in numerical order, therefore it can be a time consuming process to find a car this way. If you have a chassis number, this service is not relevant.

Q. Can I pay for my Heritage Certificate in another way?
A. You can order your Heritage Certificate online or requesting a paper order form.  We can only accept payment in Sterling by either credit card or cheque.

Q. What is the difference between a dating letter and a Heritage Certificate?
A. The Heritage Certificate lists all the information that was recorded by the factory when vehicle was built, including the date of build. A dating letter will give you to date of manufacture only.

Q. Why does my Heritage Certificate not list the engine or body number when I gave them to you?
A. On a Heritage Certificate we can only list details that can be verified by an official factory record, if details weren't recorded we can't include them. With certain cars, such as the MGA, the engine and body numbers were not recorded in the build records.

Q. Can you undertake private research for me?
A. No, however we can make material available for you to conduct your own research from Monday – Friday between 10.00am – 4.00pm.  Please phone 01926 645076 to make an appointment for our Reading Room.

Q. What does 'certificate to be issued to' mean?
A. This will be the name of the vehicle's owner.

Q. What does 'certificate re-issue' mean?
A. If you already have an existing Heritage Certificate but you want it made out to a new owner or it is in the old style and you'd like the up to date version, we can re-issue the certificate for £19. We require the certificate number or, if an old certificate that isn't on our database, a copy of the original certificate.

New Certificates for Old
If you already have a Heritage Certificate for your car and would you like it updated to the new style Certificate (introduced in September 2001). Send a copy of your original Certificate, along with your name, car model and Certificate number and we will re-issue your Certificate. (This offer only applies if you do not require any changes to be made to the details shown).

Terms and Conditions
Research is carried out on the basis of a chassis number supplied by the enquirer. No liability can be accepted where an incorrect number has been quoted even if this leads to an incorrect car being researched.

Whilst every care is taken to ensure the correctness of information supplied, neither BMIHT nor any of its associated Trusts or Companies will be held liable for any errors or omissions or the consequences thereof.

A Production Record Trace Certificate in itself does not constitute verification of the present condition or actual identity of a particular vehicle.

We reserve the right to demand proof of ownership of a vehicle before issuing a certificate.

If, for any reason we are unable to fulfil your order, a full refund will be given.

Your credit card will be debited when your certificate is ordered.

Please allow 28 days for delivery.

If you have any enquiry regarding your certificate, please e-mail hmcarch@heritage-motor-centre.co.uk
